MTA.me- A Musical View of the Subway

February 2nd, 2011 |  Published as an Aside in Subway | by

I came across this really cool interactive project by Alexander Chen at MTA.me.  Chen uses real data for up-to-date arrival/departure times from the MTA to create a moving map of all the New York City subway lines. As lines cross each other, they create a tone (dubbed from a cello) and you can actually see the line get ‘plucked’.  It is a pretty cool project that draws inspiration from the classic 1972 Massimo Vignelli subway map.

Check out the demo video below, but be sure to go see it live on the site- it is pretty cool to see it live.
